ERNEST C. WITHERS A Life's Work August 7, 1922 - October 15, 2007
Withers' photographs have appeared in museums around the world. Four major exhibitions of his work have traveled to museums, universities and other institutions in the United States and Europe.
In the fall of 2012 Dr. Ernest Withers works has been on display in Berlin, Germany at the Memphis Exhibition Berlin with viewers enjoying his Civil Rights and Music collection. Several books on his photography have been published including: Pictures Tell The Story; The Negro Baseball Leagues; the Memphis Blues Again; and Reflections of History.
Among his many awards and honors are honorary doctorate degrees from the Art Institute of Boston, Memphis College of Art, Syracuse University and the University of Massachusetts at Farmingham.
In 2004 he received what he considered to be his highest award, the University of Missouri School of Journalism Honor Medal for distinguished service in journalism.
The National Association of Black Journalists honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award; he was inducted into the Black Press Hall of Fame.
He has photo credits are in scores of feature film movies and documentaries the last film he licensed his work being viewed prior to his death was an HBO film "Manchurian Candidate" starring Denzel Washington.
